Taapsee Pannu's Anubhav Sinha Directorial Is A Slap That Will Hit You At The Right Place

Taapsee Pannu in an informal chat said 3 in 5 women go through domestic violence at various levels and that pretty well sets the base right. Starring Taapsee and directed by an evolved Anubhav Sinha (the one I love) Thappad talks about domestic violence and how a woman one day decides to say no to it. Taapsee’s eyes speak and Anubhav gives the perfect words to them.

The trailer of the film is a perfect entry to the world, it is strong, fierce and correct but isn’t as impactful as both the director and actor’s last work. Let me explain.

Thappad Trailer Review: Taapsee Pannu's Anubhav Sinha Directorial Is A Slap That Will Hit You At The Right Place
Thappad Trailer Review: Taapsee Pannu’s Anubhav Sinha Directorial Is A Slap That Will Hit You At The Right Place

The trailer opens to a couple who is just like us, a normal happy couple that is enjoying life living the small moments. The trouble begins when in a party amidst the guest, the husband decides to slap his wife (thus the title Thappad) and that very moment makes her question the institution of her marriage. In a dialogue, Taapsee says that moment made her reconsider her decision or something to that effect and you can feel it.

This brings me to the dialogues. The film has some amazing dialogues. They aren’t the cryptic ones, they are simple but are enough to pierce you at the right place. For eg, when someone says it was just a slap, to which Taapsee replies, “Just a slap, par Nahi Marna chahiye that”. That very moment makes you realise the depth of the situation.

While the cast including the perfect Ratna Pathak Shah, Tanvee Azmi, Dia Mirza, Sushil Dahiya and many more great actors, it wouldn’t be right to comment on their performances just by the trailer.

Talking about the impact, the trailer has everything but something feels missing and the glue to bind everything seems to be less. Comparing this to the director’s last, Article 15, the trailer had hit us hard to walk out towards the trailer. Thappad does the job 50%. Maybe the base in Article 15 was wider, while the premise in Thappad is just a family.

The best part of the trailer has to be the justice that it does to each and every character. It is commendable since not many trailers turn out to be successful in doing that. Each actor that enter the frame has dialogue and powerful one.

I will watch Thappad for the writing and the therav that Taapsee Pannu brings on screen. Would recommend same to you.

From Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor To Ayushmann Khurrana, Vote Now For Your Favourite Actor

Koimoi Audience Poll 2019: It’s been a year to remember with performances like Ranveer Singh’s Gully Boy, Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh & Ayushmann Khurrana’s brilliant-trio of Article 15, Dream Girl and Bala.

Let’s take a look at the nominees for the Best Actor of 2019 category:

Koimoi Audience Poll 2019: From Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor To Ayushmann Khurrana, Vote Now For The BEST Actor
Koimoi Audience Poll 2019: From Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor To Ayushmann Khurrana, Vote Now For Your Favourite Actor

Vicky Kaushal as Major Vihaan (Uri: The Surgical Strike)

Vicky Kaushal delivers a mature performance without going overboard even with a single expression. He’s effortless as Major Vihan and the rigorous efforts are visible throughout his screentime. Vihan is vulnerable and here’s where Vicky aptly captures the spirit of the character.

Ranveer Singh as Murad (Gully Boy)

Good acting is always about good conflicts because that’s what invites good drama. Here, Ranveer Singh’s Murad is battling with his survival in life. He’s not your filmy macho hero, he’s someone you’ll find on the streets. Ranveer breaks his own bar setting the new one so high that now it needs a film of another level to touch it. From his struggle face to his celebratory face, Ranveer just keeps unmasking the level of talent he has.

Amitabh Bachchan as Badal Gupta (Badla)

Amitabh Bachchan looks sharp and edgy and delivers performance on similar lines. Thanks to his otherworldly baritone, you’ll just get lost in what he says rather than what should you see. With his inborn quirks, he manages to pull off this complex role at pretty much ease.

Akshay Kumar as Havaldar Ishar Singh (Kesari)

Akshay Kumar gives in all to the character and it pays very well. Not at all an easy role to play but this powerhouse of talent makes sure to carry the entire movie on him. He’s magnanimous in action sequences, and there’s not a single flaw about him when it comes to combat.

Ajay Devgn as Ashish Mehra (De De Pyaar De)

Ajay Devgn knows what he’s doing and at no place is uncomfortable in doing that. There’s nothing artificial about his character and he tries to perform with utmost honesty.

Shahid Kapoor as Kabir Singh (Kabir Singh)

Shahid Kapoor touches level he has never done in the past. For many, Haider was his best performance to date but Kabir Singh challenges that throne. The former was complex but the latter allows the star to express his emotions in a very expressive way.

Ayushmann Khurrana as Ayan Ranjan (Article 15)

With every movie, Ayushmann has just shown us how acting is not always about ‘acting’. In Article 15, his long pauses and expressions speak way louder than words.

Hrithik Roshan as Anand Kumar (Super 30)

It’s not at all easy to get your act together in a movie such as this. Full marks to Hrithik Roshan for not losing his head for a single scene. He performs each scene as his first & excels in them. Yes, the dialect fluctuates from being a caricature to actually nailing it. He has mastered the look and the walk, which helps him to express with perfection.

Ayushmann Khurrana as Karamveer Singh (Dream Girl)

For the second time in the list, we wonder what Ayushmann Khurrana must be thinking before signing every film, it surely could be “My next will be my best.” Good actors get into the skin of a character, but brilliant actors are those characters. Half the battle was won when Ayushmann decided to make us believe he can still maintain the tonality in a female’s voice. He’s the literal example of a ‘complete package’ in today’s generation of actors.

Hrithik Roshan as Kabir Luthria (War)

Hrithik Roshan is, without any doubt, the most good-looking guy in Bollywood right now. He’s stylish, he’s confident and has a different aura around him in this film. From his walk to the way he winks, Hrithik is very convincing in his role.

Ayushmann Khurrana as Balmukund Shukla (Bala)

If there’s one star that leaves you with no words after every of his performance, it has to be Ayushmann Khurrana. He’s not only working on his range with every film but adding a zillion more expressions to the bag of his acting. He pays tribute to the stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor making it enjoyable with pure unadulterated charm.

Taapsee Pannu Reveals How She Twisted A Man's Finger Who Tried To Touch Her Inappropriately

Actress Taapsee Pannu has recounted an incident when a man tried to touch her from behind.

“We used to go to the Gurudwara during Gurpurab and I remember there used to be stalls next to it that served food to people outside. The place used to be crowded in such a way that people would always end up bumping into each other. I had awkward experiences before this incident as well. But this time, I had an intuition that something like this would happen as I am going into that kind of crowd. I was mentally prepared for it until I felt a man trying to touch my backside. That’s when I realised that this has happened again,” Taapsee shared while having a conversation with Kareena Kapoor Khan on the latter’s show “What Women Want 2”.

Taapsee was brave enough to defend herself and she give that man a hard lesson.

“This was followed by an instant reaction. I grabbed his finger twisted it and moved fast from that area.” she added.

The episode, featuring Taapsee, will air on on 104.8 Ishq FM.

Alia Bhatt Reacts To Kangana Ranaut's Sister Rangoli Chandel Mocking Her For Sending Flowers

Alia Bhatt had sent flowers to Kangana Ranaut recently as the actress was honoured with Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award. The Gully Boy actress sent flowers to Ranaut to congratulate her for the title.

However, Kangana Ranaut’s sister Rangoli Chandel shared the pics of the flowers on her Twitter page and mocked the actress. Rangoli tweeted, “Yeh dekho Alia ji ne bhi Kangana ko phool bheje hain, Kangana ka pata nahin magar mujhe bahut maza aa raha hai (See, Alia has also sent flowers. I don’t know about Kangana but I am really enjoying it).

Bhatt has now reacted to Rangoli Chandel’s tweet mocking the flowers. Alia Bhatt told Bollywood Hungama, “Let them react the way they want to. I am happy for Kangana.” Well, that’s quite a short and sweet response from the Raazi actress. We wonder what Kangana Ranaut has to say on this.

On the work front, Alia Bhatt will be seen in Mahesh Bhatt’s Sadak 2 which also stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Pooja Bhatt, and Sanjay Dutt. The film is slated to release on July 10, 2020.

On the other hand, Kangana Ranaut starrer Panga released last week. Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, the film also stars Richa Chadha, Jassie Gill and Neena Gupta in pivotal roles. She will be next seen in for Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa’s biopic titled ‘Thalaivi‘.

Kangana also recently announced her next film called Tejas in which she will be playing the role of an air force pilot.

Does Well On Saturday, Set For Another Major Day Today

Street Dancer 3D: After a decent first day, Street Dancer 3D found momentum on Saturday as 13.21 crores came in. This is a good jump over Friday collections of 10.26 crores. Of course, the numbers that the Remo D’Souza film has managed on Saturday are the kind that should have actually come on Friday itself. Still, to move on from that point and then begin to show growth was the need of the hour for Street Dancer 3D and it has managed that now, which is a positive sign.

Box Office - Street Dancer 3 does well on Saturday, set for another major day today
Street Dancer 3D Box Office Day 2: Does Well On Saturday, Set For Another Major Day Today

The dance film has collected 23.47 crores so far and while 40 crores would be comfortably surpassed by the time the weekend is through, it has to be seen how much closer does it come to the 45 crores mark in its first three days. A film of this cast, scale and size should have ideally amassed at least 50 crores over the weekend. However, with Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior continuing to run riot and Panga finding its footing too in multiplexes, Street Dancer 3 has been robbed off at least 10 crores more that would have otherwise come in, if not for the competition.

Nonetheless, what matters is that the film is being liked by the audiences and that should help it register a solid Sunday.

According to a report in Pinkvilla, while talking about why she did the film, Disha said, “Salman sir just asked me if I would like to do the film. I said yes. There is a reason why I chose to do the film, besides the fact that it had Salman sir and it was directed by Prabhu Dheva sir. It has to do with the story and my character.”

Disha further spoke about how she enjoys working with Salman but is also intimidated by his aura and his charismatic presence. “He is a star. He has this aura around him. But he is very sweet. I respect him a lot. I am still intimidated by working with him. During Bharat, I was not intimidated on-screen but off-screen I was. In my mind I was. But you have to keep everything aside when the director says action, after the cut I was intimidated again,” she added.

Radhe starring Randeep Hooda, Jackie Shroff alongside Salman and Disha is slated to release on Eid 2020 and is being directed by Prabhudheva.

Taylor Swift's Documentary Miss Americana Shows A Major Reason Why The Singer's Dad Worried For Her Life Once

Miss Americana: Taylor Swift’s father Scott Kingsley Swift feared for the singer’s life when she openly spoke out against Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn during the 2018 mid-term elections.

Taylor made it clear she was an LGBTQ and women’s rights supporter and a fervent Democrat as she took on Blackburn.

Taylor Swift’s Documentary Miss Americana Shows A Major Reason Why The Singer’s Dad Worried For Her Life Once

In her new Netflix documentary “Miss Americana”, director Lana Wilson has captured the moment the “Love Story” star told her parents she was getting political, despite warnings from publicists, who feared she would be attacked just like the Dixie Chicks were when they spoke out against President George W. Bush, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Speaking after the world premiere of “Miss Americana” at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah on January 23, Taylor Swift recalled the scene in which she spoke about her plans with her parents and shared her father’s concern.

“My dad has always just been terrified about my safety since I was a kid… The fact that my job entails standing on a stage and there’s so many threats we get on a daily basis that nobody ever knows about and we just try to keep that stuff under wraps as much as possible, but my dad is the one who has to see it,” she said.

She added: “And so for him it was all about, ‘What could happen to you if you say this? If you say this, is my daughter in danger? Is this the moment that I should have stopped it from happening?’ “

“Our political opinions and our opinions are defined by what happens to us in our life… Seeing what was happening in my home state, and it all culminating with having a conversation with people who’ve been so wonderfully supportive of me throughout my entire career, feeling so afraid for my safety…”

Ajay Devgn-Saif Ali Khan Starrer Holds Quite Well On 3rd Friday; Enters 200 Crore Club

Tanhaji Box Office: The first major release of 2020, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, has entered the 200 Crore Club. The film has achieved this huge feat in just 15 days and there is a lot more that is yet to come.

Tanhaji Box Office Day 15: Ajay Devgn-Saif Ali Khan Starrer Holds Quite Well On 3rd Friday; Enters 200 Crore Club

On its third Friday, the film held on quite well to bring in 5.38 crores more. This is quite good as the second Thursday was 7.02 crores and the fall isn’t big. Moreover, there is competition from Street Dancer 3D (and to a little extent Panga as well) and still, the collections are quite impressive. This isn’t all as the Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan starrer is in its third week, and the biggest of the films slow down by this timeline. However, that’s just not happening for this biggie which is now a mega success.

The hold so far has now assured the film of a lifetime past the 250 crores mark. Though expectations were always there of a good hit in the making, the combination of so any factors and an out and out positive word of mouth has ensured that Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, which has collected 202.83 crores so far, turns out to be a huge biggie.

From Sonchiriya, Section 375 To The Tashkent Files, Choose Your Favourite Movie Direction With A Difference

Koimoi Audience Poll 2019: Last year came in as a surprise in both the aspects of filmmaking – content and box office. From Abhishek Chaubey’s Sonchiriya to Ajay Bahl’s Section 375, some movies might not have been received well or worked as expected at the box office, but the directors undoubtedly made an appreciable difference with their direction.

Check out the nominees for 2019’s Best Direction With A Difference below and choose your favourite:

Koimoi Audience Poll 2019: From Sonchiriya, Section 375 To The Tashkent Files, Choose Your Favourite Movie Direction With A Difference
Koimoi Audience Poll 2019: From Sonchiriya, Section 375 To The Tashkent Files, Choose Your Favourite Movie Direction With A Difference

Abhishek Chaubey (Sonchiriya)

Abhishek Chaubey, the sincerest student to come out of Vishal Bhardwaj’s school, continues to create a different world for his films. After a very dark Udta Punjab, Abhishek takes us to the ravines as no one has ever done before. He has mastered the art of silence and there are powerful sequences shoved with a soothing tune of guitar and piano.

Nitin Kakkar (Notebook)

It’s a hat-trick of good films for Nitin Kakkar, after Filmistaan and Mitron. The best thing about this man is that he’s self-aware. He knows what kind of film is he making and stays in that zone throughout. His version of Kashmir is even more beautiful, thanks to the rich production value.

Vasan Bala (Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota)

Vasan Bala’s first movie in the theatres and he brings out everything he has accumulated all these years of being a Bollywood buff. The love for cinema is visible from the first scene where you hear ‘Yeh toh hona hi tha’ (Ek main aur ek tu) suddenly erupting amidst an action scene.

Vivek Agnihotri (The Tashkent Files)

Vivek Agnihotri infuses a whole lot of political information to design some very good courtroom sequences in the film. The movie emerged as a sleeper hit at the box office.

Ajay Bahl (Section 375)

Ajay Bahl, who previously has helmed a much controversial B.A. Pass, rises high as a director. The long shots in the courtroom sequences, smooth panning are handled very well by Bahl. Things get a little shaky at times, but thankfully such situations are few.

Shonali Bose (The Sky Is Pink)

After movies like Ammu and Margarita With A Straw, one thing was clear about the director Shonali Bose – she’ll get the emotions right, and she did. Using smooth transitions and some pleasing bridging shots, she puts you right in the living room of Chaudhary’s. She stages the film right, using all the available props to fill in the empty spaces.

Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor & Prabhudheva Make This A 'Foot-Tapping Watch'

Street Dancer 3D Movie Review Rating: 3/5 Stars (Three stars)

Star Cast: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Nora Fatehi, Prabhudheva, Dharmesh Yelande, Punit Pathak

Director: Remo D’Souza

Street Dancer 3D Movie Review: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor & Prabhudheva Make This A 'Foot-Tapping Watch'
Street Dancer 3D Movie Review: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor & Prabhudheva Make This A ‘Foot-Tapping Watch’

What’s Good: Second half of the title – Dancers – they’re brilliant, Prabhudheva enjoys the maximum cheers as Muqabla starts & it’s totally worth it

What’s Bad: First half of the title – Street because it’s totally misleading (read to know more about this aspect), despite having a story it’s not enough to balance with the spins & whirls happening through

Loo Break: Whenever you see they’re building an emotional sequence or someone’s trying to act, just head out of there and come back in on the beats of the music

Watch or Not?: If you’ve watched every dance show on this planet, the Step Up series, ABCD 1 & 2 – you might know all the tricks so you can skip it. Rest of you, give it a try for the dance

User Rating:

It’s all about the verses between two dance groups – Team India VS Team Pakistan in London. Team India is Sahej’s (Varun Dhawan) Street Dancers & Team Pakistan is Inayat’s (Shraddha Kapoor) Rulebreakers. The rivalry between them is registered from the moment they meet but there’s no backdrop apart from the religious difference. Brother Inder (Punit Pathak) burdens his dream of winning the Ground Zero dance competition on Sahej (Varun Dhawan).

Anna (Prabhudheva) who runs a hotel shows the reality of stuck immigrants to Inayat and the team. They now want to win the battle to help those immigrants. Sahej with three of his best dancers joins London’s local group The Royals and gets criticised for his decision. Now, what he does next and how well does he do on the path of his ‘homecoming’ is what the rest of the story is all about.

Street Dancer 3D Movie Review
Street Dancer 3D Movie Review

Street Dancer 3D Movie Review: Script Analysis

Before we dive deep into the technical aspects, could someone in the comments section remind me why this isn’t called ABCD3? Remo D’Souza’s goes a mile ahead of actually including a story in between all the dance. It’s very manipulating when it introduces the emotional angle but surprisingly it works at places. Good to see how Remo D’Souza takes a dig at dance films, when in a scene Varun says, “4-5 saalo se yahi dance toh kar rahe hai.”

One major thing where the film lacks is its storyline. However good the choreography is when you know who’ll win it ultimately eliminates the thrills. A thought that kept me bothered throughout was, why the makers didn’t go full desi-style street when they had to name this one as Street Dancer? Streets have zero role to play making the title misleading. The electrifying effect in the initial performance, usage of magical tricks while dancing and a lot happens on the floor which keeps you intrigued.

Street Dancer 3D Movie Review: Star Performance

Varun Dhawan gets his moves right and the dancer in him just overshadows the actor in him. That’s what’s required and he has improved a lot since ABCD 2 smoothening his dance moves. Shraddha Kapoor gets no scope to act but she balances that with her beautiful presence on the dance-floor. Though not as good as the professional dancers around her, efforts are truly visible. She deserved a more balanced character to add the value.

Prabhudheva got the maximum cheers in our press show when he just broke into dancing on Muqabla. Won’t even give my two cents neither on his acting chops nor his dancing skills because we all know what’s what. Out of the dancers, Dharmesh gets his act right and enjoys lil bit of both the departments. Nora Fatehi looked the most ‘dancer’ than all the dancers around.

Street Dancer 3D Movie Review: Direction, Music

More than Remo D’Souza ‘directing’ this film, he has choreographed it. He’s a totally different person when it comes to the dancing scenes. He manages to create the aura around those sequences. He fails in mixing the good dance with the routine story that’s running parallel. Though it’s a good try as compared to ABCD2, the story still lacks soul.

Illegal Weapon 2.0 and Lahore doesn’t bring in anything apart from a few thumping beats. Garmi literally raises the temperature as Nora Fatehi makes it just irresistible to take your eyes off. Mainu Pind Jaana Hai comes in as a surprise as it delves well into the narrative. Dua Karo serves its hollow purpose of expressing the regret of Varun Dhawan. Sachin-Jigar’s background score backs the dancing sequences making them look as dazzling as they should.

Street Dancer 3D Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Street Dancer 3D delivers what it promises – breathtaking dance. This is closest we’ve got to the Step Up series and that’s an achievement. Watch it for what it is rather than what you expect it to be & you might enjoy it.

Three stars!
