Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Julianne Moore appear “more nude than naked” in Pirelli Calendar 2017

The latest Pirelli calendar is breaking boundaries like never before. For years the calendar has been known for its fashion, style and nudity. The latest edition features actresses like Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Julianne Moore and according to the photographer Peter Lindbergh, who has shot 14 pictures for the calendar, they appear “more nude than naked”.

Peter calls this year’s edition of the calendar “Emotional”. The star-studded, 44th edition of Pirelli’s Calender includes 14 actresses namely Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, Helen Mirren, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlotte Rampling, Lea Seydoux, Uma Thurman, Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Robin Wright, and Ziyi Zhang show off their soul more than body in this classic as Peter aimed “to create a calendar, not around perfect bodies, but on sensitivity and emotion—stripping down to the very soul of the sitters, who thus become more nude than naked.” All the actresses were shot in black and white, wearing minimal makeup.

The first pictures are out and they are beautifully empowering. Quite ironic, that until last year the calendar was famous for sexualised portrayal of women. Glad that Pirelli calendar is moving towards a NSFW reputation.

“In a time when women are represented in the media and everywhere else, as ambassadors of perfection and youth, I thought it was important to remind everyone that there is a different beauty, more real and truthful and not manipulated by commercial or any other interests. A beauty which speaks about individuality, courage to be yourself, and your own private sensibility,” the photographer said at the launch.
