Here’s why Kahaani 2’s success is very crucial for Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan is a spectacular actress which she has proved time and again. But in the past few years, the actress has been struggling to make her films matter at the box office. In fact, her last biggest hit was Kahaani which released way back in 2012. The film’s success had completely changed the way female centric films were viewed since then. Now with Kahaani 2, she has to redeem herself and we can tell you why.

To be fair, Kahaani had an edge at the box office because Vidya had returned to the big screen fresh out of The Dirty Picture’s huge success. Both the films were tremendous hits which gave a huge makeover to the whole genre. Till then there were only handful of successful women-centric films. But post Kahaani, all Vidya Balan experienced were debacles. The actress is struggling to get a box office hit which will make her erase the debacles from people’s memories. The film that released right after Kahaani was Ghanchakkar which was a disaster. Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Bobby Jasoos and Humari Adhuri Kahani did nothing to help her case which only hurt her credibility at the ticket windows. One other reason why Kahaani 2’s success will mean more to Vidya because she is the woman who turned the negligent genre of women centric film into a rage. First The Dirty Picture and then Kahaani, Vidya became the torchbearer of the genre. Every actress wanted to add one such film in their kitty.  Kahaani’s success was more like a case study. A film devoid of any regular shenanigans and with a pregnant Vidya Balan in the lead went on to become supremely successful. It was unlike anything Bollywood had experienced before. But when she started failing in her next few films, the genre itself suffered a huge blow because many filmmakers who tried to cash in on the euphoria came out with bad films like Heroine and others. Yes, Kangana Ranaut has proved that she alone is enough to bring in the crowd but it was Vidya who started it all and thus, she needs to get a hit to bring the genre back in the forefront. And with the return of the same storyteller and his muse in the sequel makes us hopeful that Kahaani 2 could be her redemption.
