Vidya Balan and Sujoy Ghosh are coming back together with the sequel of Kahaani. The thriller was one of the best movies of 2012, for which Vidya got a lot of awards and appreciation. The movie even made a HUGE profit considering its low budget. However, Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh promises to be bigger and more intense than ever before. Sujoy and Vidya have collaborated once again after four years and from the looks of promos, Kahaani 2 seems to be one of the most interesting films of 2016. While the cast is near about the same, we see a fabulous new addition in terms of Arjun Rampal. So, looks like Kahaani 2 is all set to conquer everyone’s hearts, right? But will it be able to be as big a hit like Kahaani? And how much money can it make on the first weekend? Well to answer these questions, we called up our trade expert – Amul Vikas Mohan (Editor of Super Cinema) and he explained to us everything in detail…
Talking about the buzz and whether Kahaani 2 will be able to be as good as its prequel, Amul mentions to us EXCLUSIVELY, “The buzz around Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh is good. It can definitely replicate the success of its prequel. Kahaani was one of those films, which was a runaway success. People opened up to the story and they kept watching the movie later on also, weeks after its release too. There was also a great word of mouth publicity that the film enjoyed. The unusual ending, the twists and turns were things that people spoke about. Kahaani 2 is also still a relevant film coz its prequel didn’t come out too long ago. Maybe that was the issue with some recent films like Rock On 2 and Tum Bin 2, which had 8 and 16 years of gap respectively with its prequel. So Kahaani 2 is more relevant in today’s day and age. The lead cast is also same, so it is a good scenario for the film. The best thing is that Sujoy (Ghosh) has not directed any film since Kahaani, so he is still fresh and in the zone. So how much will Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh make in its first weekend? Amul adds, “I expect Kahaani 2 to open decently. It can collect in the range of Rs 6-8 crore on day one, which is really good. The lifetime depends on the content of the film and we will get a clearer picture of the weekend collections near to the release day. Primarily coz these kind of movies work really heavily on the word of mouth publicity that it receives. From Rs 8 crore on day one, Kahaani 2 can collect anywhere in between Rs 9-9.50 crore on day 2 and Rs 10 crore on day 3. But for those of you who didn’t know, let me inform you that Kahaani was made on a budget of just Rs 8 crore. And with a lifetime collection of more than Rs 100 crore (worldwide), the film made an enormous profit. Can Kahaani 2 make the same amount of profit? Amul explains to us saying, “The budget for Kahaani 2 is not on the higher side once again. It is under Rs 15 crore, which is a great number. Sujoy is a smart person, who knows to utilise the money given to him correctly. He is a producer’s director in that sense.
