Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, My Name Is Khan - 5 Karan Johar movies that set the box office on fire!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, My Name Is Khan – 5 Karan Johar movies that set the box office on fire!

He knows the pulse of the audience…

Karan Johar today is not a filmmaker but a brand in himself. His movies are known for its larger than life scale and some fairy tale-ish endings. He likes to have happy endings in his film which make audience leave the theatre with smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. He managed to do just that with his films and mostly all his films have been blockbusters. We give you a box office rundown of how his films created a storm at the ticket windows.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

It all began with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 which changed the way romantic films were made then. It wasn’t anything out of the box but the way it was packaged, complete with mush, songs, dances, music and some really good performances, it had blockbuster written all over and that’s exactly what happened. Rahul aur Anjali ka jhagda became nation’s obsession! A film that was made at budget of apparently 10 crore, went on to earn 80.12 crore and became the highest grossing film of 1998. It even won National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham

Made at a budget of nearly 40 crore, Khabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham broke all opening weekend records then. It had earned 7 crore on its opening weekend while the first week total was 14 crore. Even on its second and third weeks, it was on a record breaking spree. It earned 10.5 cr in the second week and 8 crore in its third. Now the numbers aren’t surprising since it had some of the biggest stars in the film. If it had Amitabh Bachchan as the unbending patriarch of a household, it had the family loving elder son Shah Rukh Khan and the doting younger son Hrithik Roshan. Shah Rukh and Kajol’s pairing did wonders apart from all of that.

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna

This film was ahead of its time. Extra marital affairs have always been a reality but audience wasn’t ready for the obvious just yet. Hence, the film’s reception was mixed. It was made at a budget of approximately 50 crore. But guess the fact that it boasted of a stellar cast, the film managed to earn 60 crore in the first week itself. However, it still is Johar’s least successful film.

My Name Is Khan

My Name Is Khan was Karan Johar’s attempt of breaking free from the kind of cinema he was doing till now. It was a tearjerker like his previous ones but was more meaty and relatable. It was made at a budget of 45 crore and went on to earn 200 crore worldwide. It was one of the biggest hits in the overseas. Shah Rukh as a autistic man won everyone’s hearts.

It was more of a cleverly crafted launch pad than a work of art. It gave Bollywood three immensely promising newcomers, Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. The latter is yet to give a flop while everyone wants to sign Alia in their films. Sidharth has carved his own ground in the industry doing varied roles. Guess that’s why despite being a film without any big stars, it made more than 7 cr on its opening day, 30 cr on its opening weekend and wrapped up its lifetime collection at 70 cr. Trust only Karan Johar to understand the worth of ingesting fresh talent into the system because Bollywood needed it desperately then
