Bigg Boss 10: Here’s why this season is crucial for Colors!

Bigg Boss 10: Here’s why this season is crucial for Colors!

It is that time of the year when we wait for Salman Khan to enter into our drawing rooms every night. Yes, Bigg Boss 10 begins tonight and we are understandably excited. The inaugural show has Deepika Padukone, Salman Khan and an eclectic mix of celebs and commoners inside the house. Sources tell us a lot of prep has gone into the making of this season. We know that because Bigg Boss 9 was a huge letdown. The programme had no momentum whatsoever until the entry of Rishabh Sinha and Priya Malik. Desperate, the makers also got in Imam Siddiqui for Rs one crore (as per reports!).

Bigg Boss is very important for Colors this season. The past few months haven’t been great for their prime time shows. Baring Shakti…Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki and Udaan, their other dailies are not faring well on the TRP charts at all. In fact, the 9pm-10pm slot is going dicey for them. Star Plus and Zee TV are doing much better with Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and Kumkum Bhagya. It is tough to beat Kumkum Bhagya but it is the low ratings of Swaragini (due to random plot twists) that has caused further problems. Bigg Boss will be aired from 10.30 pm on week days. It is a totally clutter-free slot. The last competitive show, Ishqbaaz on Star Plus winds up at 10.30 pm. This was the timing even last season but sadly they could not capitalise on it. We hope they have taken contestants who can bring the masala the show is known on. A TRP of 2 or more will provide a great boost to the channel, which has lost its No.1 position after Naagin went off air.

Forget the daily space, it is weekend programming that is an area of bigger concern. We knew that The Kapil Sharma Show would be tough competition for India Got Talent and 24 season 2 but even shows like Super Dancer and Brahmarakshas have proved lethal for the channel. Kavach…Kali Shaktiyon Se failed to take off like it was expected to. Somehow, family audiences could not connect with the show and the early exit of Maheck Chahal was another blow. The channel invested a lot in 24 season 2 given the positive reception for season one. However, this season was totally lacklustre with TRPs not even touching one. Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 9 also failed to ignite any kind of loyal following. The TRPs are lower than &TV’s The Voice India Kids. So, weekends are doubly crucial for the channel.

Insiders tell us that the makers have put in great efforts this time round. The contestants have been chosen with a lot of care. There is a lot of focus on people who can bring in the drama inside the house. In fact, the confirmed list came out really late as people were rethinking on whether the celeb/common man is perfect or not. We spoke to a few who said that this kind of innovation was needed for Bigg Boss. Instead of a boring mix of soap actors and struggling celebrities, the common man will bring in freshness. The only thing that remains to be seen is how excited the audience are for this Bigg Boss type of drama. The first seasons proved voyeuristic delights and fights but that slowly paved the way for a cleaner (and more boring show!) version. All said and done, the success of Bigg Boss 10 is important for the channel to regain their lost glory.
