Even Censor Board bows to the Great Thalaiva!
When one of this year’s surprise big hits, The Jungle Book, went for Censor certification, it got a U/A rating to the shock of everyone!
As everyone came trolling the certification board over this decision, Mr Pahlaj Nihalani, the Chief of the Board, had a ‘perfect’ explanation for this step. He said that there are certain scenes in the film (the Kaa sequence, most probably) that could frighten kids and parental guidance is definitely needed!
I could have agreed to his statement and have lived it, hadn’t I gone for the first day first show of the most hyped film of the year, Kabali. Even for a Rajinikanth film, the movie was his most violent film, with enough adult themes. There was wanton violence, blood and gore, mention of drugs and prostitution, and yet the film got away with a U rating!
Here are a few scenes that were the most violent in the film (SPOILER ALERT):
# Kabali bashing a goon with an iron rod in the initial portions.
# The main villain shooting down Kabali’s wife, and later kicking her in her head.
# Kabali slashing away at people after this
# Bottles being thrown at one of Kabali’s aides, and later his severed hand is shown
# The entire bloody climax
Kabali is, in no way, a film a kid should watch with his parents, let alone. And if The Jungle book can get away with U/A rating, then using Pahlaj’s same logic, Kabali should either have been given a U/A rating or even an A rating! I am not kidding – with the amount of killing and shootings in the film, the film really deserves an A rating!
Remember this is the same Censor Board that had objections to a Sooraj Barjatya (the most sanskari of the lot) film, when the Board asked a man getting hanged and the mention of the word ‘rakhail’ cut from Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.
…Even with the fighting sequences, Sultan was nowhere as violent as Kabali, and yet it got a U/A rating!
I checked out the past few of films of Rajnikanth’s and every film got a U rating!
Lingaa – U rating
Kochadaiiyaan – U rating
Enthiran – U rating
Sivaji – U rating
…it’s like none of the Censor Board members wants to offend the God himself! But then God or no God, the rules should apply to everyone equally and it should not be based on which star you have signed to play the lead!
And it’s not just me who feel Kabali got away easy with the U rating. Here are some of the other Twitterati who have similar feelings.
Unavoidable last minute age rating issue with #Kabali UK. Hundreds of tickets across the UK refunded as children were refused entry.

#Kabali gets clean ‘U’ Anything can be brought with money? Tamil cinema vyaabaarigalukaagava?— VJ Abishek (@cinemapayyan) July 22, 2016
With such blatant violence & gang warfare #Kabali was surely not meant to be a U Certificate film. Certainly some shady censoring going on

Like many other recent biggies, the U certificate just doesn’t fit #Kabali.. Quite violent in parts.. Tamil cinema censoring is a big ? mark— Kaushik (LMK) (@Lmkmoviemaniac) July 22, 2016
How did #Kabali get U certificate.. It has lot of violence, blood and gore.. It’s a U/A movie.. Something is wrong somewhere..

A mystery only the Censor Board can answer. But then as they say, it’s Kabali Da!
